The Mill alumni - Andrew Dearman
My making practice has varied over the years, moving from sculpture to painting to photography and back again—and more recently to a hybrid art/academic research method that I find meaningful as a form of making. The construction of a conference paper is both a physical and conceptual process of gathering material, of shaping and polishing it into a particular form, which is then performed in front of strangers on the other side of the planet.
The current work involves the use of the found vernacular photograph within contemporary art. It considers such use problematic and in need of deeper theoretical consideration from positions beyond the discourse of visual art. The fields that seem to be of most use are memory studies, sociology and anthropology.
