First Nations Dance Program: Dance Classes

The Mill and Australian Dance Theatre have partnered again this year to present contemporary dance technique classes for First Nations dancers.

These classes are open to First Nations dancers only, interested in contemporary dance and for those who wish to maintain their dance technique.

Classes will begin at Australian Dance Theatre every Thursday between May 9-June 6 and July 25-September 5, and will continue at The Mill every Tuesday between September 10-October 29.

What to expect:

A mixture of facilitators from Australian Dance Theatre and First Nations dance practitioners giving a variety and mixture of different contemporary styles, including Indigenous infused movements depending on the dance facilitator.

Daniel Riley, Adrianne Semmens, Kaine Sultan-Babij, Karra Nam and Caleena Sansbury.

First Nations Dance Program: Choreographic Lab with Kaine Sultan-Babij

Experience choreographic tools crafted from the interconnectedness of cultural understandings and contemporary movement. A dynamic three-day journey exploring the fusion of cultural understanding and modern movement in this immersive workshop series.

Through a blend of hands-on exploration and insightful discussions, participants will uncover choreographic tools inspired by cultural insights and contemporary dance forms. Engage in collaborative exercises, guided reflection, and practical application to deepen your understanding and expand your creative repertoire.

This 3-day choreographic workshop will run June 7-9 and has a stipend (artist fee) of $400 for 8 First Nations participants.

First Nations Dance Program: Free Rehearsal Space

The Mill is excited to announce to the First Nations Dance Community in South Australia a total of 3 weeks of free space for The Mill’s Breakout dance/theatre space.

If you have a project you have been working on, want to start something new or just need space to rehearse, please email The Mill at least 3 weeks in advance to secure times and dates.

Please note that The Mill’s Breakout space is subject to availability as it is used for The Mill’s Performing Arts Residency Program and hired out to the public. Please email The Mill’s Program Coordinator, Caleena Sansbury and she will discuss availability.

First Nations Dance Program: Community Office

The Mill welcomes all First Nations independent artists to come into the First Nations Community Office to work together and have a cuppa tea or just sit and have a yarn with Caleena Sansbury, Kaurna, Narrunga and Ngarrindjeri woman and The Mill’s Program Coordinator.

Join Caleena on her work days, Mondays and Tuesdays 10am - 3pm. All other days artists will be greeted by The Mill’s friendly team, Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm).

At The Mill, we understand that the life of an independent artist can at times be isolating and we know that working together with community sparks inspiration, ideas for future work and just having a soundboard, can be all we need. So all you First Nations mob come in get to know our friendly staff and enjoy the space at The Mill.

We have two seats available and can offer a computer that will be connected to The Mill’s wifi. Send us an email to let us know when you would like to pop in.

First Nations Dance Residency 2024

The Mill First Nations Dance Residency is an extension of our First Nations Dance Program launched in 2023. The residency is an open project development and presentation platform available to South Australian First Nations performing artists.

The aim of the residency is to offer place and space as part of a vibrant arts community for artists to develop and show new or existing work. The successful recipient will be supported by our First Nations Dance Program Coordinator Caleena Sansbury.

The successful applicant will receive:

  • A $6,000 artist honorarium plus 11% super contribution

  • Two week’s full-time use of The Mill’s Breakout performing arts space

  • Artistic, technical and marketing support from The Mill

  • A showing and Q&A hosted by The Mill

  • A photographer and videographer documenting the showing

Outcome:

The successful applicant will be required to present a ‘work-in-progress’ performance including a Q&A at the conclusion of this residency at The Mill for industry, VIPs and GP guests, supported by The Mill.
